Virtuality
Network: Fox
Stars: Clea DuVall (“Carnivale”), Sienna Guillory (“Eragon”), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (“New Amsterdam”)
The pitch: An original space opera from Ronald D. Moore, the guy who successfully recreated “Battlestar Galactica” before ruining it with the crappiest finale ever. Peter Berg (“Hancock,” “Friday Night Lights,” “The Kingdom”) helmed the pilot about a space-ship crew on a 10-year mission to save the Earth.
Why we think they didn’t pick it up: Jitters. Despite scads of free promotion via a major summer blockbuster, Fox dumped the pricey-to-produce “Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles” and cut the budgets of other series. This effects-laden sci fi epic would be another expensive undertaking. Having geek god Moore attached doesn’t guarantee success any more than having equally idolized Joss Whedon behind ratings-impaired “Dollhouse” did this season. Fox tested the waters by airing the two-hour pilot as a movie July 4th weekend.
