Few burger spots bank on their customers’ active lifestyles as a marketing strength. But Canyons Burger Company is working very hard to stand out from the pack. A burger joint with an edge is the big selling point of Canyons. So far, the Georgia-based company's approach has worked. Canyons has two locations—one in Woodstock and another in Brookhaven.

Burger, Burger: Canyons is going for the big bang for your buck and the menu reflects that. The menu boasts that the burgers are “made from fresh black Angus beef.” Their names are highly consistent with the active lifestyle theme. The Canyon burger is just a fresh grilled burger without cheese, while the Grand Canyon is a double stack with cheese.

Other Options: Laying off the beef? Then try the turkey burger served on a multigrain bun or just substitute a grilled chicken breast for the beef. It’s up to you. Avoiding meat altogether? Then the spicy black bean burger, a veggie patty that comes with its own chipotle mayo, or the portabella cap, the portabella mushroom burger that’s marinated all night, might be your best bet. Of course, you can always get the salad, where the reigning protein is chicken.

Fries, Oh Fries: You could get boring and just stick with the crinkle fries, but why? Not when the sweet potato fries are so delicious. Or you could go for the 50/50 fries and have the best of both worlds. If you're avoiding fries in general, the side salad and fresh fruit cup are the healthy substitutes.

Where Did That Shake Come From: Those who love playing it safe don’t climb mountains, do they? So keep that rebel spirit alive with Canyons’ sinfully delicious shakes. The chocolate one has to have some benefit, right? Or, better yet, maybe you just need an incentive to tackle Stone Mountain Park or to survive boot camp in Piedmont Park.

The Look: Photos of the great outdoors is what gives Canyons Burger’s interior a kick. Windsurfing, kayaking, mountain climbing frame the modest spot in Brookhaven. Nothing is over done. The point is to be natural and clean.

Dollars and Cents: There’s no dollar menu, of course. Burgers are a la carte. The Five-O, which comes with bacon, cheddar cheese, teriyaki glaze and a slice of grilled pineapple, for example, is $6.29. For about $3 more though, you can add the crinkle fries and a drink.

The Verdict: Canyons Burger is not for the fancy. Discerning, maybe, but not fancy. There’s nothing overdone here. Simplicity is the point. The fact that it’s mostly burgers and fries says it all.
