Oryx and Crake in Austin

Between SXSW showcases, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and the opening round of March Madness, Thursday, March 17, 2011, proved to be a hectic day in Austin, Texas. Atlantans in town for the festival were just as busy, with Pretty Ambitious Records hosting an unofficial party, the King of Pops selling popsicles, Kenny Crucial sightings and countless other acts playing around town.
Decatur orch-pop ensemble Oryx and Crake made their SXSW debut at Paste’s day party, bringing along their entire lineup, as well as fellow Atlanta musician Richard Parsons, to stake their claim in Austin. But it wasn’t all business, as frontman Ryan Peoples took a few breaks to chomp down on some free Qdoba and have a couple drinks in honor of St. Patty. The group will play one more show on Friday (March 18) at ATL Yeah!’s day party, before making the 18-hour trek back home.
