Travis Thatcher of 'Judi Chicago'
One look at Judi Chicago’s Travis Thatcher and you know he’s a trip. Best of all, he’s happy with that. His group, an experimental, electronic duet, has no exploratory reins and may sound entirely different from one show to the next.
What’s new?
We’re in the middle of working on our second album. It’s much different as we’re putting a lot into it; it’s a bit darker and weirder. One thing: we’re both control freaks, so it’s a totally empowering experience because you’re letting go.
Isn’t it hard to be a control freak and do what you do, experimental music?
Well, we never planned on a live show turning out the way it is.
How does a live audience react to your avant-garde style? It’s cool to see their reactions from surprise to wanting to dance. We just see it as fun. We don’t care if there are two or 200 people.
Explain more about your live antics.
We’ve come on in purple marching-band outfits before. Ben is such a fantastic performer -- he’s done poetry in his underwear while I reboot the computer.
As quirky as you seem, your music has been well received, hasn’t it?
Yes, we’re going to the UK on Sept.5 and we’re really excited about it. Europe is always more accepting of electronic music.
Given your experimental style, try and describe your music.
It’s a primal thing. We’re two people with a laptop, guitar and keyboard. We want to make it as improv as possible – the whole sort of chance music.
