Name: DJ Salah Ananse
Age: Classified
Hometown: Southwest Atlanta
Neighborhood: Greenbriar
Spins: House, Soul, Hip-Hop
For that perfect ensemble, you go to...? Drew Lewis in Midtown. They
have the best labels in men’s clothing. For shoes, Wish in Little Five
Points.
Favorite music store to stalk? Honestly, most of it is sent to me. When I do buy music, I get CDs and vinyl from Earwax Records. Criminal
Records is cool too, but I go there more for magazines. I also go to
Discolandia on Buford Hwy.
What’s bumping in your mp3 player right now? My whole catalog
, because I’m always listening to my stuff trying to make it better. It’s a
little different, a lot of electronica and soul - N.E.R.D., Estelle, Marvin Gaye, Kid Sister.
What’s your drink of choice and where do you go to get it? I like
wine, Sauvignon Blanc, at The W Hotel or Noir (my favorite bartender Monica
works there).
Favorite place to stuff your face? Lately, I’ve been going to Brake
Pad in East Point because I ride a motorcycle and you can just pull up on
your bike. I like everything there from the blackened tilapia tacos, to
their black bean burger.
What’s your biggest guilty pleasure? "The View." I watch the first
15 minutes of it every day. Politics are my thing and they have good
topics. I think I’m way more progressive than most people, so it’s good to
gage where the rest of the country is.
On any given day of the week, what hotspots are a must for you?
Monday–Graveyard in East Atlanta; Tuesday–Sugar Hill for the Tuesday
Jam Session; Wednesday–MJQ; I do a crawl on Thursdays: Bazzaar, Sutra
and Leopard Lounge; Naturally Straits on Friday but I start out at Stats;
Saturday–Utopia; On Sunday, I just bounce around on my motorcycle.
Where can we see you at work? Thursday–Stats (until July) and
Sutra; Friday–Straits; Saturday–Utopia; Every third Sunday–Sushi
Sundays.
Prep for a show includes…? A glass of wine (not that I’m an
alcoholic). I DJ on feel. A lot of my gigs are open, so whatever I’m
feeling that day that’s what I’ll do.
So what’s so great about being a DJ? The interaction between me
and the crowd, seeing people hear something new and unexpected, and like
it.
