Atlanta musician Ryan Horne takes the stage for the Metromix Soundcheck on 11Alive during the 6 a.m. hour on Friday, Nov. 7. Though Horne is busy preparing for the release of his latest album, "Wheat Fire Collections," on Dec. 8, he took time out to answer our questions.
For those not familiar with your music how would you describe your sound? I always say it is "folk Americana at its finest." The lyrics and melodies are what I shoot for. It has never been about complexity—a great song, to me, is one that speaks with emotion, so that is what I go for.
How did you approach your new record differently than prior records? The new record was approached with a little less organization than previous records and more creative energy. With no time frame, we had plenty of different options to experiment with and play around with as we tracked each song. I worked with some great friends of mine on this new record and that in itself was enjoyable.
If you could tour with any band, past or present, what band would it be? Right now I would love to tour with Martin Sexton, Patty Griffin, Ray Lamontagne. Actually, there are a ton of artists I would love to tour with.
Which Atlanta venue do you like play at the most? If I am playing with my band, I would have to say Smith's Olde Bar or The Loft, but if I choose to play solo or with a small three-piece band I would have to go with the smaller, more intimate setting and venue, Eddie's Attic.
Where do you hang out most in Atlanta? I live right near Decatur, so I hang out in Decatur, East Atlanta and Cabbagetown quite a bit.
