["Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey" premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. The following is an excerpt from Metromix's coverage of the festival.]
"Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey" just might be the cutest movie at this year's festival. The story of Kevin Clash, the man behind the muppet, is almost too perfect to believe. Ever since he was a child, Clash was fascinated by puppetry and children's entertainment. His dream was to work for Jim Henson. And with a lot of hard work and incredible tenacity, he not only got to work for and with Henson, but went on to define one of the most memorable muppet characters of all time.
Not everyone is lucky enough to achieve everything they want in life. Here's the story of someone who is. "Being Elmo" tracks Clash's journey from childhood dreamer to adult success story, and gives us an inside look at Clash's talents, Elmo's origin and the remarkable impact the character has on children. You'd have to be pretty grouchy to resist the warm and fuzzy heart of this family-friendly doc.
Director Constance Marks works within the confines of TV-level biographical puff piece, but her subject is so special and the cumulative effect so buoyant, that "Being Elmo" transcends those limitations to deserve its shot at theatrical release.
