Jack Nicholson as Frank Costello, “The Departed”

It’s a movie about two molls—a good cop (Leonardo DiCaprio) inside the mob, and a crooked man (Matt Damon) in the upper ranks of the police. But Martin Scorsese’s Oscar winning thriller mines suspense from the fear of what might happen to DiCaprio’s good guy if mob boss Costello ever discovered the truth. Costello is a true terror: Sleeping next to a bowl full of cocaine, sneering at detectives while ogling prostitutes, and occasionally launching into a tirade that ends with someone dead. He feels invincible and operates in a universe all his own. Scariest of all, he’s not afraid to go down in a blaze of glory.
