Whether intentionally or not, Bale's first collaboration with iconoclastic indie director Todd Haynes helped the actor move beyond his status as a dreamy Brit pin-up boy. Inspired by glam rock icons David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed, the story features Bale as a young gay glam rock fan who investigates the disappearance of superstar Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and becomes intimately entangled in the singer's wild scene.
