Local competitive eater took part in the Coney Island contest on the Fourth of July
Grace Lee of Atlanta spent the Fourth of July eating hot dogs in New York, but she wasn't at a backyard cookout. Lee took part in the 2011 Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island. Lee ate 24 hot dogs in the contest, which had a separate women's division for the first time ever. Sonya Thomas won with 40 hot dogs. Juliet Lee and Stephanie Torres tied for third with 29.
Lee shared some photos from the event with us, as did our friends at Metromix New York, who covered the event. For Lee, highlights included eating butter pecan ice cream for dessert and seeing Nick Cannon, who was a guest griller. She also had her picture taken with contest winner Sonya Thomas, who is known The Black Widow of competitive eating.
Lee has been preparing for the competition for months. She won a qualifying round for the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest in Charlotte, N.C. on June 18. She went to Coney Island for the national championships with help from her sponsors. They included Q100's The Bert Show and the Nook at Piedmont Park, which hosted a viewing party for the contest on the Fourth of July.
In addition to being a competitive eater, Lee is also the founder and CEO of Atlanta GSpots, a website that covers the Atlanta food scene. She tweets as @AtlantaGSpots and was one of Metromix Atlanta's Top Tweeps in May 2011.
