Out of Left Field: Sports in Atlanta
The Gwinnett Gladiators will play the Charlotte Checkers on Nov. 26 at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.

Sports fans have plenty to be thankful for this week with several big games and key rivalries being played out. Hockey fans can watch the Thrashers and the Gladiators take on division rivals while basketball fans can check out the Hawks’ new look as they debut new jerseys against division rival Orlando. The Falcons also return to the Dome to take on Tampa Bay, but the event that is likely to have most people’s attention is the ongoing rivalry between Georgia Tech and Georgia in their college football season finale.

While Georgia Tech won the ACC Coastal Division Championship with its near-perfect record this season and will be competing for the ACC title on Dec. 5, their in-state rivals in Athens haven’t fared as well in SEC action. But none of that matters when these two teams collide on the gridiron in a rivalry that dates back more than a century. The Yellow Jackets emerged victorious by only three points in Athens to conclude last season, but the Bulldogs have dominated Tech with an overall record of 59-39-5 and are out to redeem themselves on Tech’s home turf.

The Falcons are undefeated at home in November, but have had opposite luck on the road. The team returns to the Dome today to take on NFC South rival Tampa Bay. Despite Atlanta’s inability to keep a winning streak alive for very long, the Falcons are still much better off than the last place Bucs, who’ve had a hard time getting a single victory this season. As the NFL season winds down, today’s game could be crucial to Atlanta’s playoff chances, especially considering that the Falcons have two important home games against Philadelphia and New Orleans in the next two weeks.
