Just because you're not close to the beach doesn't mean you shouldn't celebrate seafood. Park Tavern's OysterFest is the perfect occasion to kick back, relax and eat all the oysters you can handle. The parkside party is also a great reminder that spring's is well on its way.
The event gets started at 1 p.m. Feb. 28 and is scheduled to last well into the night. Here are 10 reasons you'll want to attend OysterFest:
1. Prove your love for these shellfish by consuming as many of them as your heart desires.
2. Arrive early (doors open at 1 p.m.) to beat the crowd. Last year, more than 7,000 people showed up for this shindig.
3. Stop worrying about which months you shouldn't eat oysters in, because all of the oysters served at this event will be steamed or fried. But just in case you're keeping track, oysters aren't supposed to be consumed in any month that doesn't have an 'r' in it. (That's May, June, July and August for those of you who have always had trouble with spelling).
4. Wash all those oysters down with a glass of beer.
5. Take a break from the oysters and have a hamburger. And another beer.
6. Test the theory that oysters are an aphrodisiac, whether you're planning to bring your significant other or meet someone at Park Tavern. If you're looking for someone new, keep in mind the beer goggle effect—and limit your search for romance to the duration of your first drink or two.
7. Relive your youth (or perhaps your elementary school days) with music from Cracker. Sing along to songs like "Eurotrash Girl," "Low" and "Teen Angst (What the World Needs Now)" to perfectly recapture the spirit of the early '90s.
8. Show your appreciation for local rock by catching the set by Gringo Star, which is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
9. Flash back through musical history with songs from the Last Waltz Ensemble, an Atlanta band that plays both traditional and original arrangements of songs by Bob Dylan and the Band.
10. Remember that the world—or in this case, the park—is your oyster. When you've had your fill of seafood, take a stroll around Piedmont Park, which is, of course, the green space that gives Park Tavern its name.
