When it comes to Sir Elton John, well, Atlantans typically jump to be a part of his latest endeavor. The 16th annual "Smash Hits" tennis tournament is proving no different. On Sunday, Oct. 12, the part-time Atlanta resident will bring tennis greats, Billie Jean King, Andy Roddick, Martina Navratilova and Anna Kournikova to grace the courts at Kennesaw State University for this year’s "Smash Hits" charity tennis tournament.
Founded in 1993, the event has raised more than $8.5 million to benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) and various local AIDS organizations. This year’s tournament will benefit the EJAF and the Atlanta AIDS Partnership Fund. Atlanta society swan Sacha Taylor who is also Jeffery Fashion Cares co-chair, Charlie Hendon and Dr. Bobbie Bailey will serve as the co-chairs for "Smash Hits" this year. King and Sir Elton will serve as the honorary co-chairs and the team captains for this year’s competition. “I am honored along with my two co-chairs to have been asked by Billie Jean and Elton to work with such amazing people from the EJAF and World TeamTennis,” says Taylor. “The community’s response has been overwhelming to support the EJAF and the Atlanta AIDS Partnership. The EJAF is Fashion Cares top donor. This past year [they] gave Fashion Cares over $100,000. I feel like this is just a small way I can help the foundation after they have been so generous to Jeffrey Fashion Cares over the years.”
The Oct. 12 event starting at 1 p.m. will include a charity tennis exhibition, preceded by a pre-match VIP champagne brunch reception featuring live and silent auctions. So, start dusting off that “tennis chic” attire and get ready for the patron party for this fab soiree that will take place on Saturday, Sept. 13 at Whiskey Park at the W Midtown. Did you have something better to do? We didn’t think so. The "Rocket Man" is calling.
