Ah, Halloween, another holiday made for kids but enjoyed way more by adults. Trick the little babes with candies and toys while the “responsible” folk get boozed up and make each other cry. It's also the time when Six Flags theme park, just outside of downtown Atlanta, puts its scary suit on. Adding scare all over the park is almost as intensive as receiving it, as the general public is open to do between the entire month of October (until November 3 to be exact). Metromix was on the scene getting the bejesus scared out of us so you know what you have coming.
The Deal: Fright Fest runs Fridays-Sundays through October and comes with a park pass that costs $29.99 online, $39.99 at the gate or $49.99 with a 2009 seasonal pass that includes the rest of this year. Now that’s the deal there, buddy. The park is obviously the same, but has undergone changes here and there to scare things up. They call some of it “street-mosphere,” as the grassy areas are all now cemeteries, half the patrons are undead and feature zombies and ghouls as entertainment. There are also areas for the kiddies for those people who pretend that’s why they are really there. We all know better.
The Characters: Zombies, vampires and ghosts, oh my. Not only are these characters on the street to scare young and old; they also reside within all of the Halloween-themed shows. One in particular features Rigermortis, a.k.a. “Morty,” a joke-telling, coffin-selling wise ass whose corpse stinks as bad as some of his hilarious assessments of passers-by. Oh yeah, it’s a must see.
The Spots: Between Bugs Bunny Spooky Town, Monster Plantation and Dr. Fright’s Dead Man’s Play, there is a ton of fine fright to go around. One spot every attendee can’t miss is Dr. Fright’s Frightotorium. You see, his wife and daughter died from the plague, so the good doctor is experimenting on the good citizens of Atlanta to find a cure. It will cost you an extra $10, but it is most certainly worth it. The pitch-blackness is only sliced up with dimmed red lights, like trickling blood, and the howls and screams of the undead within. They sneak up from behind, pop out with blood, brains and blind scares come from all over. The decor is great and the doctor is certainly sure to freak you the hell out.
The Word: Six Flags has definitely done it right, and anyone who digs on some freaky Halloween goings-on should buy in while the scaring is good. The rides are a perfect adrenaline shock to a system that is already getting dressed up and freaked out very creatively on these grounds. Sure, you don’t get the booze you love on this holiday but you can get a good buzz on anyway. Where can you still get a good scaring these days, huh?
