Quick Look: Lumen

The Ritz-Carlton Atlanta Downtown is known for its stellar customer service, but it’s a luxurious hotel usually characterized by a traditional, classic look—usually being the key word. After recent renovations, the Ritz, especially its lobby lounge Lumen, is now—dare we say it?—trendy.

Named for the numerous ways the interior is decorated with light, Lumen has a certain “wow” factor. The space was designed by Bill Johnson of The Johnson Studio in Atlanta. The hardwood floors contrast low chairs of white leather and high banquets that are velvety and navy blue. Elaborate chandeliers, sheathed by a circular band of fabric, produce playful patterns of light. Small silver tables, which were designed by Brad Oldham (brother of renowned designer Todd Oldham), reflect light produced by smaller, more focused, lamps and, perhaps most awe-inspiring, the silver holders open up to a glowing, LED-lit menu!

Four massive, custom-designed abstract paintings line the walls facing the lounge and in the entrance to the lobby. Three signature cocktails on the Lumen drink list were inspired by these paintings. The Seas of Europa—Stoli Strawberry, watermelon pucker, Cointreau splash, sour apple, watermelon and Blue Curacao pearls (picture tiny round Jello shots)—is the most novel of the three. The Evening Bonfire—Absolut Kurant, limoncello, Blue Curacao and blueberry and mango puree garnish—takes the cake for potency. A selection of wine, champagne and imported and domestic beers is also available, as well as traditional mixed drinks, of course.

In the food department, small plates make sharing easy. The blue crab, spinach and artichoke dip served with garlic crostini is creamy, flavorful and surprisingly light. The crispy fried calamari is only lightly battered and served with red pepper aioli for a spicy accent. The smoked chicken, provolone and arugula panini with bell peppers and onion compote could be a meal on its own.

For dessert, Lumen offers four "edible cocktails" that are described as “exotic, sophisticated gelatins” on the menu. These four items are practically bite-sized, and, again, bare a uncanny resemblance to Jello shots (a gourmet version, of course). The available varieties are melon citrus twist, mango margarita, Georgia Peach and Death by Chocolate.

Overall, Lumen provides a refreshing twist to the Ritz’s usual staid image and makes for an impressive place to bring guests, dates and friends.
