History: Fado was formerly located on Peachtree Road and Buckhead Avenue in the heart of Buckhead. It was a favorite early morning hangout for European sports fans, home to the St. Patrick’s Day “kegs and eggs” celebration and had a killer cover band that played late into weekend nights. When word of a Buckhead renovation hit the street, rumors swirled about whether this Atlanta staple would make it through the transition. Fado’s doors did close in October 2007 and the void was filled with an interim members only feeling replacement simply called, The Pub. Luckily, Fado part deux opened five months later only a few blocks away from the original location.
Atmosphere: When you walk into Fado you cannot help but feel that you are in a bona fide Irish pub. Perhaps that’s because the pub was actually produced in Dublin and transported to Atlanta to maintain authenticity. As you scan the room your eyes are met with neutral colors from the stone and tiled floors to the dark, wooden bars and tables. If you are in the mood to be private, sit in one of the deep, framed booths and make your own nook. When you are feeling more social, pull a stool up to one of several bars and have an Irish car bomb with your neighbor (don’t let him tell you it will taste like chocolate milk. It won’t). After you climb the seemingly endless staircase you will discover an amazing roof top patio that is worth the effort. Just make sure you use the restroom before you reach the top because it is a long way to the nearest relief.
Drinks: Fado is known for their large selection of European brews on draft and assortment of Irish whiskeys. Order a domestic and your server may look at you sideways but they do have a couple on tap. But when in Ireland, do as the Irish do. Plus, singing “Danny Boy” isn’t quite the same holding a Bud.
Food: Fado is the perfect place for happy hour or a night out with your pals. If you find yourself hungry, order anything that includes a “boxty” (warm, potato tortilla) as an ingredient and you will be perfectly content. The chicken pot pie is particularly delicious. The top rises a good two inches over the pot rim for an impressive presentation. After you tap through the flaky crust you’ll find a warm, gooey center with chicken and veggies that tastes home cooked. So whether you want a small bite with your beer or a complete meal Fado has you covered for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
