We've seen those watered-down mixed drinks and light beers you've been throwing back. Time to toughen up for winter with a few cocktails that will put some hair on your chest.
Enter moonshine, aka hooch, mountain dew or whatever other pet names you might call it to make it seem less scary. Get to know moonshine better with these drinks-some entry-level models, some intermediate libations and some hardcore, throat-burning, call-for-your-mama masterpieces.
Southern Art: Death's Door
If you thought Oprah's former chef Art Smith would go light in the cocktail department at his new Atlanta restaurant, you'd be mistaken. Death's Door served at Southern Art is 80-proof white lightning that hurts so good. Served straight up, this drink creates a burning sensation that you won't be able to fight, so embrace the blaze as it goes down your throat.
DBA Barbecue: Cherry Fizz
With shared Southern roots, moonshine and barbecue go way back, so it's no wonder this joint delivers the goods in the hooch department. In this cocktail, DBA Barbecue uses Junior Johnson Midnight Moon Cherry, cut with lemonade and soda and served on the rocks.
P'Cheen: Plum Infusion
If you'd like your moonshine quick and dirty, P'Cheen hits the spot with its house-infused option. The one-ounce shots of Olde Smokey White Lightin' infused with plum mix a little fruit flavor with the fiery sensation. This variety is off the menu, so make sure you don't plum forget what it's called.
Sweet Georgia's Juke Joint: Miss Ceely's Fruit Punch
This sweetly named drink is the signature cocktail of Sweet Georgia's Juke Joint. This pineapple and Junior Johnson lemon moonshine cocktail is so easy going down, you might just forget it's moonshine you're sipping on.
Lumen Lobby Bar: Blackberry Moonshine
This summer, Lumen Lobby Bar at the Ritz-Carlton Atlanta (that's the one downtown) introduced a Blackberry Moonshine Snow Cone that was all the rage. The bad news: the snow cone variety was only available for a short time. Now for the good news: they still carry the moonshine and the same ingredients, making for a superb off-menu cocktail. Take moonshine, Absolut Berri Acai, simple syrup and blackberry puree and you've got a strong and sweet berry treat.
